Acute Medical Rehabilitation— Regaining your independence.

Rehabilitation addresses physical or medical needs as they pertain to the activities of daily life. The focus of Acute Medical Rehabilitation at Brotman Medical Center is on achieving or restoring basic skills that may allow independent living and working. Specialized concerns such as feeding, motility, communication, attention and safe self care receive individualized assistance by professional staff members in a structured, therapeutic setting.

Rehabilitation team members at Brotman include the Medical Director, nurses, physical, occupational, and speech therapists, social workers, psychologists, family physicians and other trained assistants. They work with patients and their families to help them reintegrate into their homes and communities. Services are provided for:

  • Stroke (CVA)
  • Closed Head Injury
  • Spinal Cord Injury
  • Peripheral Nerve Injury
  • Multiple Trauma
  • Hip Fractures and Replacements
  • Amputations
  • Polyarthritis
  • Degenerative and Progressive Neurological Disorders
  • Guillain-Barrí
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Parkinson's Disease
  • Cancer

The program has two parts:

The Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit provides extensive therapy for patients with orthopedic and neurological conditions who are otherwise medically stable. Each patient receives a minimum of three hours of rehabilitation training each day.

Occupational Therapy/Physical Therapy offers a series of practical training courses. Physical therapy includes electrical stimulation, ultrasound and cervical traction. Occupational therapy uses adaptive equipment for dressing, cooking and hygiene.
